Lime mortar comes in many forms. It's not a one-size-fits-all material, and the same is true of the sand used in the mix. In use, lime mortar needs more attention and care than its modern cement alternative. A newly repointed wall will need to be looked after and protected from the elements, which makes the work much more labour-intensive than using cement.

What is lime mortar repointing and do I need it?

Lime mortar repointing is the traditional method of renewing the external joints of brick or stone walls using a lime-based mortar. It is the correct choice for older, solid-wall properties and heritage buildings, where breathability and flexibility are essential to allow the structure to manage moisture naturally.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do you use lime mortar or cement mortar for repointing?

Both. The correct choice depends on the age and construction of the wall. We assess the existing mortar and substrate, then specify a lime or cement mix that is compatible so the repointing performs correctly and doesn't damage the masonry.

Can you work on listed buildings and conservation areas?

Yes. Much of Eastbourne Old Town, Hastings Old Town, Brighton's Regency squares and Sussex's villages fall under conservation controls, and we regularly repoint in lime to conservation standards, supplying specifications for council heritage teams where approval is needed.

How much does repointing cost in East Sussex?

Repointing is priced per square metre, typically from around £30/m² for straightforward raking-out and refilling. Scaffolding, brick repairs and wall-tie replacement add to the cost. We survey first and give a free, fixed written quote, no estimate games.

Is your work guaranteed and are you insured?

Yes. All workmanship is guaranteed in writing and we carry £1 million public liability insurance. Certificates are available on request before work begins.
